Crafting Your Own Pottery Candlestick
Creating your own pottery can be a rewarding experience, allowing you to express your creativity and produce functional art for your home. This guide focuses on crafting a unique pottery candlestick.
Materials and Tools
- Clay
- Modeling stick
- Water
- Cardboard
- Round stick (same size as the candle you intend to use)
Creating the Candlestick
Prepare the Base: Start with a round base approximately 1/4 inch thick and 4 inches in diameter. This will serve as the foundation for your candlestick.
Building the Structure:
- Place a lump of clay in the center of the base and work it in.
- Add another lump on top and repeat, gradually building the candlestick to your desired height.
Creating the Candle Socket:
- While the clay is still moist, gently force a candle into the center of the candlestick.
- Twist the candle to create a socket deep enough to securely hold it.
Ensuring Symmetry:
- Use a cardboard "templet" with one edge trimmed to the desired shape of your candlestick.
- Run the edge of the templet around the walls of the candlestick as you work. This will help you maintain symmetry and ensure the projecting cap on top is even on all sides.
Adding a Handle (Optional):
- For a candlestick with a handle, build the wall of the candlestick as if creating a jar, leaving a center hole large enough to hold a candle.
- Cut a strip of clay (approximately 1/4 inch wide and 1/4 inch thick) and lay it around the top of the wall, allowing it to project about 3/8 inch over the edge. Smooth this piece on top, inside, and outside using your modeling stick and fingers.
- Prepare a strip of clay (approximately 1 inch wide and 3/8 inch thick) for the handle. Join one end to the top band and the other end to the base, using a small lump of clay to fill around the joint. Smooth the piece on all sides.
Finishing Touches:
- Once the candlestick is complete, insert a round stick (the same size as your candle) into the hole. Leave it in place until the clay is dry to help maintain the candlestick's straight form.
Drying and Sealing
Allow the clay to dry thoroughly. While firing in a kiln isn't necessary, it can enhance the pottery's durability. If you choose not to fire, you can waterproof the candlestick by applying bathtub enamel to the inside (and outside, if desired) to seal any cracks and prevent leaks. This is especially important if you intend to use the candlestick to hold melted wax.
