Crafting Your Own Pottery Candlestick

Candlesticks add a touch of elegance and warmth to any home. Why not create a unique piece yourself using pottery techniques? This guide provides a simple method for crafting your very own pottery candlestick.

Materials You'll Need

  • Clay
  • Modeling stick
  • Round stick (same size as the candle you intend to use)
  • Cardboard
  • Scissors

Building Your Candlestick

  1. Prepare the Base: Begin with a round base approximately 1/2 inch thick and 4 inches in diameter.

  2. Construct the Body: Place a lump of clay in the center of the base. Work it into the base, then add another lump on top. Continue adding and integrating clay until the candlestick reaches your desired height.

  3. Create the Socket: Carefully force a candle into the moist clay. Twist it around to create a socket deep enough to securely hold the candle.

Achieving Symmetry

To ensure your candlestick is symmetrical, use a cardboard "templet." Trim one edge of the cardboard to the desired shape of your candlestick. Run the edge of the templet around the walls as you work. This will help you identify areas that need filling, trimming, or straightening.

Adding a Handle (Optional)

  1. Build the Wall: If you desire a handle, build the wall of the candlestick as if you were creating a jar, leaving a center hole large enough to hold a candle.

  2. Create a Top Band: Once the wall reaches the desired height, cut a strip of clay 1/4 inch wide and 1/4 inch thick. Lay it around the top of the wall, projecting 3/8 inch over the wall. Smooth this piece on top, inside, and outside using your modeling stick and fingers.

  3. Attach the Handle: Prepare a strip of clay 1 inch wide and 3/8 inch thick. Join one end to the top band and the other end to the base. Use a small lump of clay to fill around the joined areas, and smooth off the piece on all sides.

Finishing Touches

Once the candlestick is complete, insert a round stick (the same size as your candle) into the hole. Leave it in place until the clay is completely dry. This will help maintain the candlestick's straight shape.

Drying, Glazing, and Firing

While firing in a kiln will give your candlestick a professional finish, it's not strictly necessary. The clay will dry hard enough to hold its shape. If you intend to use the candlestick to hold candles and want to prevent any potential moisture damage, you can apply bathtub enamel to the inside and outside to waterproof it.

Ornamentation

Pottery may be ornamented by scratching a design on it with the end of a modeling stick. You can do a simple, straight-line design by using a ruler to guide the stick.
