Crafting Your Own Beeswax Candles

Beeswax candles offer a natural, non-allergenic, and virtually dripless alternative to traditional paraffin candles. Making them yourself is surprisingly simple and rewarding. Here's a guide to creating beautiful beeswax candles at home.

Materials You'll Need

  • Beeswax Sheets: Available in various colors from craft stores, beekeepers, or farmers' markets.
  • Wick: Purchase candle wicks from your local arts and crafts store.

Essential Supplies

  • Scissors: For trimming the wick and excess beeswax.
  • Hairdryer (Optional): To soften the wax, facilitating the adhering process.

Step-by-Step Directions

  1. Prepare the Beeswax: Take one sheet of beeswax and fold it in half. Cut along the folded edge to create two separate pieces.

  2. Prepare the Wick: Cut the wick to approximately 2 inches longer than the length of the beeswax sheet. Ensure the wick extends beyond each end of the sheet.

  3. Position the Wick: Lay the wick along the edge of the beeswax sheet closest to you, ensuring it hangs off both ends.

  4. Begin Rolling: Start rolling the beeswax tightly over the wick. The tighter you begin, the sturdier and better-burning your candle will be.

  5. Continue Rolling: Carefully roll the wick within the beeswax, similar to rolling modeling clay. Stop about 2 inches from the opposite side, ensuring the ends remain smooth and straight. Apply slight pressure as you roll to maintain a tight bind.

  6. Seal the Candle: Upon reaching the end, seal the candle by gently pressing the edge into the rolled candle, starting from the middle. Your body heat will help melt the wax, securing the seal.

  7. Trim the Wick: Trim the wick at the bottom (adjust the bottom for stability if needed) and cut the top wick to about ¼ inch.

Tips for Easier Adhesion

If you encounter difficulties with the beeswax adhesion, use a hairdryer to gently soften the wax. Direct the heat over the wax as you roll, ensuring even warmth for better pliability.
